Top 10 Adobe Lightroom Tips. Tip Number 6, How to take better photographs

One of the great things about digital photography is that there is a great deal of information about an image stored by the camera within the image itself. This information is called EXIF information. Typically is holds the date and time that the photograph was taken, the resolution of the file and, more importantly, it holds information about the camera settings used to capture the image. For example the following information is stored within each digital image:

  • Camera make & model
  • Lens used
  • F Stop
  • Shutter Speed
  • ISO Setting
  • Focal length of lens
  • Flash settings

For most people this information is never seen, although there are many programs available which will extract it, if needed. The neat thing about Adobe Lightroom is that this information can be displayed as an overlay on each image as you are working. This is a fantastic way for a photographer to review the settings that they used to capture an image. If an image is slightly blurred, you can see what shutter speed was used - maybe you need to use a faster setting with that lens next time? If you like a particular depth of field effect, you can see exactly which F stop and focal length was used to achieve it. All this is done without any effort - just turn the option on and make a habit of reviewing your work as you edit. Here is what you do:

  1. From the ‘View’ menu choose ‘View Options’
  2. Make sure that the check box ‘Show Info Overlay’ is checked on for Info 1 and Info 2
  3. Choose the information you would like to have displayed, I use:
    • Info 1: File Name, Date & Time, Cropped Dimensions
    • Info 2: Exposure Bias, Exposure & ISO, Lens settings

That’s it.

  • Go to the Develop module (Press ‘D’)
  • Press ‘I’ to toggle the three information views (1, 2, off)
